I generate them from RAW only to share online or physically (on card) with someone who is unlikely to be able to view the RAW plus my tweaks.

I don't edit JPEGs, nor do I save them locally. If you want to see your adjustments, why aren't you simply previewing your edited JPEGs? If you want a set of preview images, save a down sampled or highly compressed version of your edits with something like "_pre" embedded in the file name. If I thought the JPEG quality (artistic, not compression level) was sufficient, I might not shoot RAW, or I would shoot RAW+JPEG, processing the RAW in the event the JPEG didn't satisfy me. It is an artifact that can be, in theory, faithfully recreated from the RAW data, Picture Style (and other settings?), and some algorithm. I don't consider the embedded JPEG(s) as anything more than a convenience for review. I can see wanting to avoid risking any corruption to the RAW, but then, I would make a backup if particular images were especially important to me. It's time for you to move on to some sort of image management application. I wish Canon would make this a setting in DPP, as I would definitely choose to enable this, even if it ignored cropping. With your method, how would you handle multiple edits of the same image?
#How did i set cr2 file canon 6d full
The thumbnail is usually something like 160x120 (yes, a 4:3 aspect ratio) and the preview a fairly highly compressed full resolution image. The risk of corrupting the source files, regardless how small, is something many don't want to take.Ĭanon embeds 2 JPEGs, a thumbnail and a preview. Most consider the RAW (or OOC JPEG) as the original and treat it as a read only file. The embedded JPEGs are supposed to represent the "as taken" image. in DPP on the RAW to be reflected in the embedded JPEG that many other viewers display when browsing RAW files. I hope this clarifies that I'm not wanting to start with a lower quality version of the captured image (an edit of an edit). I'm not wanting to edit the JPEG embedded in the RAW file so much as update/replace it.
